Welcome to Beantown

I just finished an illustration for Improper Bostonian, a local arts and entertainment magazine. They're easily one of my favorite freelance gigs, because I get a 10" x 12" full pager to tackle. And the art director gives me a lot of freedom. The articles are usually funny—this one is a laundry list of everyday annoyances for city-goers in Boston. I tried to cram a lot into the picture (worked large at 14" x 17") and had a lot of fun with the details. The street date is Oct 11th, so look for it if you're in town.

I don't think there's a better way to show all the woes of Boston. :) You even covered the underground! In a few months when it starts snowing, my face will look just like hers all the time.

Hi Bob,

the colors are great! I really like that kind of coloring.

Thanks everyone! Colors, or lack there of...I was going for a dismal look. So it worked, and I think it helps to pull back on too much color when you have a lot of line detail. I only had two nights to pull it off for the deadline, so I'm happy with the end result.

Oh, and thanks, Maxi! I'm turning 27 on Oct 22nd. Getting old :(

GETTING OLD!? Man, what should I say? Since last month I am 37!
But I like it. Being in the middle of 30 is great. You have learned a lot, your body still works, there is still a lot to discovered and somehow you have found your place in this life...

Hi, Mr. Flynn.

Great job capturing and cramming as much Boston as you could into this piece. I'm a native, and I think you definitely got the feel down. That little guy by the green line at North Station looks just like me. In fact, I'm using it as a Facebook profile picture if that's all right with you. I credited/linked you and everything.

(Just Say the word and I'll pull it.) :)

Peace,
Ron

Hi Ron! By all means! Thanks for asking, though. I'm glad my illustration passes with a true Bostonian. This is a favorite of mine...so fun to draw.
