4 Heeby Jeebys and a Marker Story

Howdy! I just updated my online store so that you can now buy all 4 Issues of Heeby Jeeby Comix. For each book I sign and draw a little doodle in the back. Issue #4 is the newest of the bunch, and offers up tales of trickery, transformation, terrible hairdos, and amazing frisbee stunts! Our comics are all ages, shapes, and sizes approved—in easy-to-use-and-share book form!

Each issue is 32 pages, full color, and includes comics you've seen over at our blog.

I also still have copies of the mini I created for TCAF, Marker Story. I drew it over the course of a night with a Crayola marker as an exercise in improvised story-telling. It comes in multiple colors, and each book includes a customized ending drawn in marker.

So, if you're looking for some new comics, feel free to drop by my online store. Thanks!

MeCAF 2012 in Portland, Maine

May is quickly becoming one of my favorite months of the year (second to October—the month my birthday, my wedding anniversary, and Halloween collectively share). The month kicks off with TCAF, and a couple weeks later, MeCAF rolls around. Two amazing comics festivals in one month! What?! CRAZY, I tell you! And I have more fun tabling at MeCAF than at any other festival.

If you haven't already heard, the Maine Comics Arts Festival is this Sunday, May 20th from 10am -5pm at the Ocean Gateway (located on the waterfront) in Portland, Maine. Vacationland, yo! My home state!

Admission is only $5 and kids 12-and-under get in FREE!!!

Dan Moynihan and I are tabling together again—with all 4 Heeby Jeebys (including Issue #4, which debuted at TCAF). I'll have everything I had at TCAF, in fact, with a newly folded and stapled supply of Marker Story minis.

We'll also be doing FREE monster drawings on the spot!

So, if you're shuffling around New England this weekend, this is the place to be. Take a drive up to Portland, grab a lobster roll, and get some comics to go. See you there!

* I should add, that spectacular festival poster is by Shelli Paroline and Braden Lamb.

TCAF 2012

With TCAF right around the corner, I figured I'd collect everything I've been tweeting and tumbling (?) over here on the blog. The Toronto Comic Arts Festival is this weekend, and I'll be debuting a bunch of new stuff, the biggest being Heeby Jeeby Comix #4. It's another book of 32 full-color pages for all ages! I literally received my first shipment last Friday, so if you're up in Toronto, you'll be the first to get them.

I'll have all 4 books for sale at my table, and actually, this weekend will be Heeby Jeeby Comix #3's first festival debut as well. What's great is that each of us (myself, Dan, David, and Chris) have all done a cover now. They make for a fun set, I think.

What else? I just finished (literally, a day ago) a new mini. It's the first time I've worked in the quarter page format like this—a 40-page story that I drew over the course of night with a couple purple crayola markers (the book is in b&w). Each book will come with a custom ending drawn on the spot in marker.

I'll have my usual collection of prints, and I printed up this new one. In pink, and an alternate dark color.

TCAF is at the Toronto Reference Library. Where you can you find me?
Well, if you found me last year, it turns out I'll be in the exact same spot.

Table 154. Over by the water. Look for the brain!

This year I'm tabling with Andy Ristaino— sitting alongside the comics crew from Doublefine, including Scott C., Nathan Stapley, Joe White, and Gabe Miller. To my left, Jesse Moynihan and David Huyck. I'm looking forward to returning to this row. I had a blast last year.

Finally: Panels! I'm on two this year; both on Saturday.

1:00pm – 1:45pm: Kids Comics Quickfire
(2nd Floor: Appel Salon, Novella Room)
Part drawing jam, part fast-paced game show! Volunteers from the audience are paired off with (or against) professional cartoonists in a series of fun-filled drawing challenges! Featuring Dave Roman (Astronaut Academy), Raina Telgemeier (SMILE), John Green (Teen Boat) and Bob Flynn (Heeby Jeeby Comix).

3:15pm – 5:00pm: The Adventure Time Mega-Panel!
(High Park Ballroom)
Who doesn’t love adventures? TCAF presents: Adventure Time creators doing what they do best: making crazy-delightful comics about the series they work on.  Don’t miss this fun-filled live drawing session, accompanied by Q&A and general discussion. With Pendleton Ward, Ryan North, Bob Flynn, Andy Ristiano, Michael DeForge, Steve Wolfhard, and Jesse Moynihan.

So, I'll be busy!

One more time:

VOTE for Heeby Jeeby!

Heeby Jeeby Comix, the all-ages comic book that I've been self-publishing with Chris Houghton, David DeGrand, and Dan Moynihan for the past couple years, was recently nominated for a 2011 New England Art Award in the ‘BOOK’ category! It was exciting and unexpected news for all of us. At this stage public voting is what determines the winner, so if you have a moment we would hugely appreciate your vote.

---> Vote Here!

All you have to do is enter your name and email to vote (there is no registration required). Heeby Jeeby Comix #3 is right at the top of the page in the ‘BOOK’ category.

You can learn more about the awards at the New England Art Awards website.

Voting ends this Friday (just a couple more days!), so this is the final push.

In other news, Heeby Jeeby Comix #4 is already in the works. We're looking at a Spring release and a festival debut at TCAF. You can still purchase copies of issues 1 through 3 directly through me.

Thank you!

Everybody KNOWS...

... I'm a heeby jeeby monster!

Hey! BIG NEWS: I just sent Heeby Jeeby Comix #2 off to the printer! Turnaround is about a month, so look for a release sometime in March. This harry guy above is a rendition of, well...myself. Each of the four of us drew monster portraits for the inside cover of the book.

Also, I just posted Dan Moynihan's cover art on the Heeby Jeeby Blog --> sneak peek!

Dan and I will be tabling at MoCCA in April, so if you you're attending you'll have shot of getting your grubby little claws on the new book.

"Drip" for Heeby Jeeby

I posted this comic about a week ago on Heeby Jeeby Comix but thought it proper to repost over here (with process) because after all, this blog is Drip's namesake! So, in case you didn't make it over to Heeby Jeeby, here it is again:

Below is some of the sketching that went into writing this 2-page gag. I typically write in doodles. "Drip is awoken by vacuuming birds and retaliates."—that doesn't get me very far until I work out the individual drawings. Often, the drawings come before I've figured out the story.

The vacuum crew: big bird, little bird (circled).

And my pencil rough on copy paper, where I plan everything out.

Drip is an older character (spawned from a sketchbook around 2003), so I'm glad he finally made it into a Heeby Jeeby comic. If you're interested, here's an old post where I explained some of the story behind him --> (Drip!).

And finally, below is the comic I drew for ARGH!#5 in 2008, where Drip made his first major appearance. I noticed the quality in this earlier post wasn't so great, so here it is larger, less compressed, and hopefully easier to read (4 pages in two spreads).

This was when I was predominantly inking with nibs; now I use a brush pen. More info on ARGH! at its website, if you haven't heard me mention it before.

Halloween Comic: Process

When I was cleaning off my work table tonight, I collected some scraps to show some process for my latest comic. Thank you for your responses, and for supporting the bunch of us this Halloween season—which marked the one year anniversary of Heeby Jeeby Comix. If you haven't seen our new batch of comics yet, head on over.

The idea for this comic came together through doodling. Sometimes it's as weird as that. I was drawing cats and pumpkins, and the one in the upper right here struck me as kinda fun—I wrote "Lucky Cat?" and counted off nine lives.

I explored the idea of a cat interacting with a pumpkin, keeping the nine lives in the back of my mind. Again, working on paper. Drawing. I can’t emphasize this enough — I think a lot of us live in our heads too much. I’m guilty, as I’m sure many of you are, of lying on the couch staring at the ceiling, forcing ideas to come. Sometimes they do (for me, an idea will arrive on the bus ride to work when I’m lucky). But by drawing (or writing), you invite randomness and play to enter into the process, which you can spin into events and story elements. I’ll run an idea by my wife, too — talking out your ideas can help things coalesce.

Here's a key drawing: A cat on a cell phone, which spurred other ideas (a pumpin getting very annoyed). And after much spiralling, I had a story.

Below: my early thumbs, where I plot out panel layout. Here, the thought occurred to make it a scrolling webcomic (which I thought would lend itself to falling). But because our intent is to get these comics into book form eventually, I structured it in 4 pages over 2 spreads.

Then, on copy paper, I rough out the panels to scale (but smaller), and scrawl out the comic, loose.

These are the drawings that inform everything—where I try to infuse the most energy and life.

I mean, this is a mess.

But it gets me to where I need to go. I transfer this scrawl onto bristol, which I refine in my final pencils, and then ink.

Something is always lost in the process. But I consider it my job to retain as much of the life from the scrawl as possible, by limiting the steps. Here, scrawl to pencil to ink.

Then, it's time to color. Sometimes I have the color worked out in my head as I'm drawing. More often, I work through multiple color attempts.

Purple, red, and orange? This is my flats stage, where I block in quick colors as I paint things in. This wasn't working.

Then I realized the cat would need to be dark for the ghost-cats to contrast as light (knowing they'd be transparent). So I reversed the value field (background lighter, cat darker). But the colors still weren't reading night. And were a bit duller than I wanted.

Eventually I landed here (above). Which is a kind of primary color scheme, with the addition of some neutrals. Orange and brown were added later. Once I mapped out the color space for the free-fall panels (with the blue night sky), it appeared I had something. Comics are funny in that the color scheme needs to work across the entire comic. Sometimes I leave it for an hour or two and come back to it, to make sure nothing strikes me as looking off. It's all about solving various elements of the puzzle.

Here's the full comic below.

So, that's basically how this comic came together. Leave any questions or comments you have, and I'll try to answer them. Thanks for following along!
